In Jule, “Smart Osvita” conducted the annual conference for the volunteers who teach Ukrainian children in the project “Ukraine Speaks English”. In the summer, the meeting involved 35 volunteers from Canada, the US, Japan, Turkey, Spain, Portugal and Australia. And since the beginning of the project in March 2022, there have been almost 170.
At the conference, the teachers had an opportunity to learn more about “Smart Osvita” and each other, discuss their activities, and exchange experiences.
“Our project is currently one of the biggest volunteer educational projects in Ukraine. Volunteer-teachers conduct lessons every day, six days a week. They donate their time and provide support and warmth to Ukrainian children. Many of them have been teaching in the projects for more than two years already. That is why for us it was important to get together with them, even if it was online, to thank them and to discuss our future plans,” says Olena Zhupanova, project manager.
The children who participate in the project have also prepared their portraits of their teachers for the conference. And the artist skillfully turned these portraits into a poster that was presented at the meeting as a token of gratitude from the children.
The project “Ukraine Speaks English” is one of the initiatives of NGO “Smart Osvita” that we launched as a response to the challenge of the full-scale invasion. Its aim is to provide free of charge English language meetings for Ukrainian children in order not only to improve their language skills but also to demonstrate support from all over the world, to provide a safe space and community, to offer opportunities to receive new knowledge and leisure.
The project included various topics: travels in the Amazon rainforests, studying the underwater world with oceanographers, programming, music, natural sciences, yoga, painting, even tricks, and many more. Volunteer-teachers join from different parts of the globe, which strengthens connections with various world cultures.
You can join the meetings and receive updates in the Telegram channel of the project.
The project “Ukraine Speaks English” is implemented by NGO “Smart Osvita” in partnership with “Classrooms Without Walls”/Teachers for Ukraine.
