The story began in March 2022 when David Falconer, the principal of a Canadian school, responded to our invitation for foreign teachers to deliver free online lessons to Ukrainian children. Smart Osvita NGO wanted to help children to adapt to the new circumstances and distract them from the war. At the same time, we wanted them to keep learning and practicing English.
David devoted hours to volunteer teaching and finding individuals and organizations that would join him to deliver online lessons. From famous Astronaut Chris Hadfield to the Smithsonian Institution to The Edmonton Public Library joined in to support Ukraine. This is how the project “Teachers for Ukraine” was born.
David says:
“I remember hearing an air raid siren at our first online meeting. I realized that because of the conditions Ukraine was in I had to do everything I could to support Ukrainian children”,
David and Margit Muller, who joined him, continue to recruit new volunteer teachers by knocking on all doors and introducing our project to different Canadian and Australian universities and media. Also, since March 2022, David has conducted orientation training sessions for new volunteer teachers so that they understand what to consider when meeting with Ukrainian children in war.
The project has been so beneficial to children that as a result of our cooperation, David founded Classrooms Without Walls NGO in November 2022. The organization aims to provide access to online learning for children in conflict zones. CWW now has three programs: Teachers for Ukraine, Teachers for Myanmar, and Teachers for Afghanistan (in partnership with Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan).
More and more international organizations, charitable foundations, volunteer teachers, and universities worldwide are becoming interested in Classrooms Without Walls activities.
